This week’s fashion news was all about high profile names either giving, or giving very cheaply, to the people.
Firstly we had the repentant Naomi Campbell commencing her court-mandated community service at the New York City Sanitation Department in the Lower East Side. Campbell was sentenced to this rather un-glamorous community service after pleading guilty to throwing her cell phone at her former maid over a missing pair of jeans.
Campbell turned up dressed in vicious looking high-heeled boots, fur and leather. Though that said she her true workman boots slung over her shoulder, evidence that she really was going to get down and scrub.
Then on Thursday Madonna’s budget priced H&M range, M by Madonna, was launched internationally. There have been mixed reports as to how quickly it sold out – in the UK there weren’t the catfights and scuffles that occurred when Stella McCartney’s range was launched and proceeded to sell-out in twenty minutes – there’s no doubt it was a success.
H&M advised that the range was inspired by Madonna’s own favourites “Madonna went through her closet and picked out a few staples that she felt should be in every closet” though the favoured items of the customers to the store were accessories – the sunglasses and scarves were grabbed by in the handfuls, and all priced under US$50.00.
Next up is Kate Moss who has “designed” a range for Top Shop, apparently using the same celebrity designer method ‘take them into my closet’ as Madonna…
Recently What's What and OPSM teamed up to help you find your perfect shape and style of sunglasses.
Firstly What's What researched which sunglasses suited which face shape, illustrated by some of Hollywood's most well known, which ran as Fashion For story. Visitors to What's What were also invited to enter a competition to win one of ten complimentary style sessions and a pair of sunglasses from OPSM, with each total prize valued at $500.
The lucky winners were given a style session with celebrity fashion stylists at their favourite Westfield OPSM store, along with their chosen pair of sunglasses. The feedback from which has been fantastic.
Winner Kylie who had her styling session at Westfield Fountain Gate had some of the sweetest comments, writing to say "The styling session was great fun...I am so excited to be the recipient of this prize - as a mum I never seem to spend any money on myself anymore, let along lash out on something designer! I may never go back now!”
Another of the winners, Amanda, who was styled at Westfield Carindale wrote to say "I chose a gorgeous pair of Prada sunglasses and I feel like a million dollars when wearing them!!"
We couldn't think more highly of winner Mario who sweetly gave the prize to his wife. Another million dollar situation, "The stylist made my wife feel like a million dollars and helped her choose the best sunglasses. It was a fantastic experience..."

This morning the Stella McCartney for Target fashion line was released throughout Australia, revealing that the fashion passion for anything Ms McCartney touches is just as strong here as it is in the UK.
In all the Westfield centres the Stella McCartney for Target range was available queues had formed well before store opening – the first customer lined up outside the Westfield Parramatta Target at 6:20am.
At Westfield Eastgardens, which had one of the biggest ranges, all the stock had sold within the first 15 minutes, including any clothing on the mannequins – customers had stripped these bare along with all the racks and shelves. Similarly in both Westfield Chatswood and Westfield Parramatta the range had sold out within the first hour.
At Westfield Chermside the Queensland girls formed teams with lines like "I'll grab a dress for you if you get me some scarves" so as not to miss out on any part of the range. Their budgets were looking good too: the Chermside registers were seen ringing up amounts of up to and above $5000.
There was no time to walk (or run for that matter) to the change rooms, customers were simply grabbing handfuls of clothes and trying them on where they stood. Size wasn’t necessarily a deciding factor either, with girls who would normally buy a size 8 or 10 purchasing size 14 items – this is certainly a positive day for tailors too.
Much like the fashion patrons who took time off work, queued for hours and scrambled for some of Stella designs, there’s no doubt Target will be lining up for her to design another range. Fingers crossed she does.
When Westfield asked Zimmermann, Leona Edmiston and Fashion Assassin to each design a tote to help raise funds for the Lifeline charity, the designers could not have been more obliging and involved.
Each individual satin-lined canvas bag beautifully reflects the designer’s signature style. Leona Edmiston summed it up perfectly when asked about the project, "Great idea and a great cause - we agreed on the spot to be a part of this project - what better than to carry a designer bag for a good cause".
The bags will retail for $9.95 with all profits going to Lifeline, a charity which for more than 40 years has provided Australians in need with access to 24-hour telephone counselling. The 131114 service takes around 500,000 calls each year from vulnerable Australians.
These limited-edition totes were created to coincide with the launch of the Winter Fashion 2007 campaign at Westfield and will be available exclusively from the Thursday 8th March, 2007, at the Fashion Hubs at selected shopping centres.
